Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is most famous for the bridge over the River Kwai, which was the start of the Death Railway built by POW's during World War 2. The railway was built all the way to Burma and today you can still catch a train and ride on the famous line. There is also a number of museums that paint the picture of what life was like for the POW's who suffered the terrible conditions building the railway line. There is also an allied war cemetery which is home to the many people who lost there lives building the Death Railway.
Kanchanaburi is a very pretty river side town with funky bars as well as cool restaurants along the river front. It is quite a lively place and is certainly a popular destination for travllers. There are also some awesome waterfalls that are a day trip from Kanchanaburi that have some stunning views including Erawan Waterfalls, which is one of Thailands most beautiful waterfalls.
Kanchanaburi is very easy to reach from Bangkok by train or bus. The train will take about 3 hours from Bangkok's Western station and will cost about 30p. There are many guest houses around for the budget traveler.
