Have you ever wanted to go somewhere new, exciting and different, but you were not exactly sure of where to go? If so, Koh Chang may be the destination for you.

Koh Chang happens to be the second largest island in Thailand at around 30km long and 14km wide and it is also referred to as ‘Elephant Island’. Situated in Eastern Thailand, close to the Cambodian border, Koh Chang is 85% part National park. There are also 50 smaller islands that are part of Koh Chang and they too are part of the National Park.

The island is surrounded by crystal clear water with various different shades of blue. It also provides plenty of terrain including high peaks and steep cliffs. These provide a great scenic viewpoint of the island and there is plenty of beauty to see, including several beautiful waterfalls.

Overall, there is plenty to see and you couldn’t ask for a more scenic holiday destination.

Things to See and Do and Where to Stay

Years ago, Koh Chang was not the tourist place it is today. But, recently, it has undergone a massive change and tourism has since boomed on the island. There are plenty of accommodations to choose from now, including economically priced bungalows and luxury resorts. There always seems to be some development and new hotels are added all the time. However, Koh Chang is, mainly, a natural place to visit and it is protected from various developments. This means that it will keep its natural beauty for all to see.

The Marine National Park is 75% protected by law. There are beaches, coves and bays situated around the islands. It is packed full of virgin rainforests, high peaks, unexplored jungle, colorful coral reefs and clear blue, warm seawater. There is also an abundance of fascinating wildlife to see, making Koh Chang one of the best places to visit for natural, untouched landscapes.

In the more built up areas of the island, you can find plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained and well fed and also plenty of nighttime entertainment. If you are on a low budget, the best place to go by far is the ‘Kai Bae Beach’ where you will find plenty of backpacker accommodations that is still good quality.

If you are looking to travel around the island, there are trucks that have drop off points that you can use. There are also boat trips that take you to the various different islands around Koh Chang and that is usually the most popular way of spending any free time you may have.

The accommodations generally consist of bungalows, but as mentioned there are high quality resorts and hotels that you can stay in if preferred. There really is something to suit all budgets, so you should be able to easily find something to suit you.

There are daily flights from Bangkok to Koh Chang and it doesn’t generally take too long to get there. However, it is one of the most expensive ways of getting there. So if you do not have much money, you may wish to take the bus. However, the bus tends to take at least 5 hours and not many people like that idea! You can get a bus from either Bangkok or Morchit. So, generally, the best way to travel is by car or by plane but it all depends on your budget.
