Pai
Pai is a picturesque village close to Chang Mai and Chang Rai in North Eastern Thailand. Many travelers find them selves winding up here for longer than they initially planned. The reason for this is simply that Pai is so chilled out and beautiful and is too easy to get stuck. Pai is still under developed, yet unfortunately as this place grows in popularity it we can only guess how long it is before a Starbucks pops up.
Pai is a sleepy village surrounded by mountains with a river running through it. Accommodation is available in the form of stilt bungalows built with Bamboo, all along the side of the river. Bamboo bridges enable you to cross over to the village, where massage parlors as well as restaurants line either side of the small streets. There is not much to do here, but perhaps this is what the attraction is and why people end up here for weeks longer than they first plan. There is a waterfall that you can take a day trip to and many guest houses hire mountain bikes at reasonable rates. At night the famous Bebop is the place to down Singha. Even though Pai is know for it's laid back atmostsphere there is also some great night life in this American themed and styled bar. There is also chilled out restaurants stroke bars along by the river that mimic the atmosphere of Koh Pangan or Vang Vien where movies are watched on those triangle cushions that you half sit on and half lie on.
You can travel to and from Pai by bus from Chang Mai and Chang Rai. The only route in or out is a nail biting mountain pass. But even though you are scared out of your wits this is a great opportunity to experience incredible scenery.
Pai Thailand Tip:
Hire a stilt bungalow by the river. Watch out for stray dogs which attack you while riding your bike or while walking home drunk from the pub, if they do make sure you bash them. Don't be scared if you wake up in the morning hearing drunk people singing, it's the monks.
It is all about the Beebop...
Pai is sooo cool, I absolutely loved it.
